About

As a physician specially trained in emergency medicine, Manish Shah, MD, MPH leads a team of expert health care clinicians who treat people with illnesses or injuries that could be life-threatening or pose an immediate risk to their health and well-being. Injury or illness can be caused by disease, infection, stroke, heart attack, or bodily trauma, and may include symptoms such as fevers, vomiting, bleeding, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness and pain. He speaks with patients, obtains lab tests and imaging, such as X-rays to diagnose the injury or illness and provides necessary treatment.

Dr. Shah is a professor and chair of the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also serves as co-lead of the Care Research Core at the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and is the associate director for faculty development at the UW Center for Health Disparities Research.

As a researcher, Dr. Shah is dedicated to improving acute illness care for older adults, with a specific focus on developing and testing innovative models of care for acutely ill older adults with dementia and related disorders. His goal is to prevent older adults from needing emergency department care and to develop substitutes for emergency department care, such as telemedicine and community paramedicine.
