Kristina A. Matkowskyj, MD, PhD

Kristina A. Matkowskyj, MD, PhD, is a surgical pathologist at UW Health and a professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She specializes in the identification of gastrointestinal (relating to the stomach and intestines) and hepatobiliary (involving the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder) diseases and cancers.

Dr. Matkowskyj reviews tissue samples and works with the health care team to develop a treatment plan. Her laboratory focus is in intestinal, liver and pancreatic diseases, including cancers of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and digestive system. Understanding the importance of proper disease diagnosis, Dr. Matkowskyj treats each sample as though it belongs to a loved one.

She also works with other physicians and researchers to identify better ways to prevent, identify and treat gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers.

In her free time, Dr. Matkowskyj enjoys reading, swimming, weight training and spending time with family.

I am the physician you are least likely to see while receiving your care at UW Health. However, my role is extremely important because the diagnosis I make determines the next steps in your care plan.
