Karen E. Hansen, MD is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin with joint appointments in the sections of rheumatology and endocrinology. Dr. Hansen completed her medical degree at the University of Wisconsin and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. Following a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, she served as chief medical resident for the Internal Medicine Department. Fellowship training was at Duke University Medical Center in the field of rheumatology.

 

Dr. Hansen is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology. She is also certified in the reading of bone densitometry. Her research and clinical interests include osteoporosis, abnormal vitamin D and calcium homeostasis and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome.

Research

Dr. Hansen’s research and clinical interests include osteoporosis, abnormal vitamin D and calcium homeostasis and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. Ongoing research projects include a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial of vitamin D therapy for people with rheumatoid arthritis, use of calcium isotopes to determine alterations in calcium homeostasis among postmenopausal women with vitamin D insufficiency, and analysis of lumbar spine bone mass using three different methods as a means of predicting fragility fracture among men in the MrOS study.
