About

James Alstott, MD, is a UW Health nephrologist and an assistant professor in the Division of Nephrology within the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Alstott diagnoses and treats kidney disorders.

Dr. Alstott cares for people with both chronic kidney disease and sudden episodes of kidney failure (acute kidney injury). He also helps patients manage complicated high blood pressure and imbalances of electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium) and acids in the body. His special interest is helping patients transition safely from treatment in the hospital to care at home or in other outpatient settings.

Before every office visit, Dr. Alstott thoroughly reviews his patients’ medical records and lab work. He then talks with patients about their symptoms and concerns. With kindness and compassion, he explains their level of kidney function and suggests treatment options, using terminology that people can easily understand.

During his free time, Dr. Alstott enjoys reading, hiking and spending time outdoors with his family.

The kidneys are exciting and complex. I help patients understand what’s happening with their kidneys and offer the very best treatment options available.
