Dr. Chen earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Duke University. He completed his residency in general surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a surgical oncology/endocrinology fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and oncology center.

 

Dr. Chen is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He specializes in endocrine surgery, thyroid disease, hyperparathyroidism, adrenal tumors and neuroendocrine tumors. Dr. Chen is an expert in thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy, neck dissection), parathyroidectomy (minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomy – MIRP), adrenalectomy (laparoscopic), minimally invasive endocrine surgery, and treatment of carcinoids.

Dr. Chen conducts basic science research at the University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research program investigates the development, progression, and treatment of endocrine tumors including gastrointestinal carcinoids, thyroid cancer, and pancreatic islet cell tumors.
