Dr. Muller has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and by the World Health Organization (WHO) in his prior work on the genetics of the immune response to chronic viral and bacterial infections and protection by vaccination. Dr. Muller is currently interested in the field of psychoneuroendocrineimmunology, also known as mind-body medicine. He has a particular interest and is currently funded by the NIH to study the influence of meditation on disease and health.
Dr. Muller and his colleagues are investigating what factors influence the overall mental and physical health of an individual. They are participating in studies shared by a multidisciplinary group of scientists examining the roles of social, demographic, psychological, neurophysiological, immune, and biomedical factors on health and disease. The group is focusing on persons identified as "resilient" compared to persons identified as "vulnerable," and what factors interact to yield a happy and healthy individual. The laboratory examines the effects of these factors on the function of the immune system.
