Daniel Muller, MD, PhD, joined the University of Wisconsin faculty in 1991. He graduated from Nassau Community College in 1973 with an AA degree in liberal arts and from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1975 with a BS in biological sciences. He then did graduate work at the UW in the Department of Medical Microbiology, obtaining a MS degree in 1979 and a PhD in 1981. Dr. Muller studied medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, obtaining the MD degree in 1985, and he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He spent 6 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill training in internal medicine, rheumatology and basic science immunogenetics.

Dr. Muller has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and by the World Health Organization (WHO) in his prior work on the genetics of the immune response to chronic viral and bacterial infections and protection by vaccination. Dr. Muller is currently interested in the field of psychoneuroendocrineimmunology, also known as mind-body medicine. He has a particular interest and is currently funded by the NIH to study the influence of meditation on disease and health.
Dr. Muller and his colleagues are investigating what factors influence the overall mental and physical health of an individual. They are participating in studies shared by a multidisciplinary group of scientists examining the roles of social, demographic, psychological, neurophysiological, immune, and biomedical factors on health and disease. The group is focusing on persons identified as "resilient" compared to persons identified as "vulnerable," and what factors interact to yield a happy and healthy individual. The laboratory examines the effects of these factors on the function of the immune system.
