As a physician specially trained in emergency medicine, Ciara Barclay-Buchanan, MD leads a team of expert health care clinicians who treat people with illnesses or injuries that could be life-threatening or pose an immediate risk to their health and well-being. Injury or illness can be caused by disease, infection, stroke, heart attack, or bodily trauma, and may include symptoms such as fevers, vomiting, bleeding, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness and pain. She speaks with patients, obtains lab tests and imaging, such as X-rays to diagnose the injury or illness and provides necessary treatment.  

Whether it is a life-threatening event, such as a heart attack, or a condition needing rapid treatment, such as pneumonia, Dr. Barclay-Buchanan attentively and compassionately listens to all patients to understand their health care needs and provide the most advanced medical care available.

Dr. Barclay-Buchanan is currently vice chair of clinical operations for the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine. She leads quality and patient safety initiatives that support care teams in delivering high-quality and efficient emergency medical care.

Her areas of interest include departmental operations, patient experience, peer review, trauma care, education, and mentorship. She has also authored and edited several emergency medicine textbooks.
