Dr. Klein is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and Medical Microbiology and Immunology, at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He maintains a special research and clinical interest in systemic fungal infections and has pioneered efforts in molecular pathogenesis and immunology that have helped transform the discipline into a vibrant field of research. He has published more than 100 original articles, reviews and book chapters on this subject and is a world leader in this field.
Dr. Klein has served on a number of local, national and international committees, including as Chair of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Biological Sciences Divisional Committee for Tenure and Promotion and as a Charter or Ad Hoc member of several NIH study sections. He has served on the Medical School's NIH K30 Training Grant Advisory Board and the Research Advisory Committee in Pediatrics.

Dr. Klein received several career development awards from the NIH: a Physician Scientist Award, a First Award, and a Research Career Development Award. He is funded with several active NIH grants. He received one of NIH’s most coveted honors, a MERIT award, which provides 10 years of continuous funding to the most outstanding and productive NIH funded investigators. Dr. Klein was awarded the UW-Madison Hilldale Award in Biological Sciences by the University for his distinguished research achievements. He was elected Vice Chair (2012) and Chairman (2014) at the Inaugural Gordon Research Conference on Immunology of Fungal Diseases. He has been inducted into the Association of American Physicians, a national society of physician-scientist leaders.
