About

Bermans Iskandar, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric neurosurgeon and chair of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Iskandar provides care for children with neurological conditions affecting the brain, spine and nerves. He also provides ongoing care for children with congenital (present at birth) conditions as they grow into adulthood.

Dr. Iskandar takes care of children with brain problems such as trauma, tumors and congenital conditions. He also treats spinal conditions such as trauma and spina bifida (neural tube in spine doesn’t close properly) and peripheral nerve problems occurring outside the brain and spinal cord such as brachial plexus (nerves in the shoulder) and other injuries. He has a special clinical interest in pediatric congenital neurological diseases — specifically, hydrocephalus (fluid buildup in the brain), Chiari malformations (brain and skull structure issues) and spina bifida.

In addition to his clinical and faculty work, Dr. Iskandar runs two research labs. In his research lab, he studies new treatments to promote central nervous system healing after injury. In his bioengineering lab, he studies ways to improve shunt (device to drain excess fluid) function in children with hydrocephalus.

By far, the most rewarding part of my job is engaging with patients and families during their clinic visits. You see their appreciation when things go well for the child.
