About the Presenter: James Finley, PhD, lived as a Trappist monk at the Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky, where the world-renowned monk and author Thomas Merton was his spiritual director. Currently, Dr. Finley is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Santa Monica, Calif.

About the Retreat: The weekend retreat will be devoted to exploring ways we can live a more contemplative way of life in the midst of today's world. Attention will be given to the spectrum of contemplative consciousness beginning with the simple experience of pausing to pay attention in a compassionate manner, to what is going on within us and around us in this and every moment of our life. We will see how as this experience deepens, it opens out upon the timeless wisdom found in the teachings and works of depth psychology, the mystical traditions, poets, artists and philosophers down through the ages. Attention will also be given to obstacles and unexpected blessings that transform our lives and our commitment to this journey. Time will be given for personal reflection, group meditation and discussion of the themes presented. This retreat is intended for sincere beginners and those who are more experienced in a contemplative way of life.

Fee: $325/person, includes dinner Friday, lunch and dinner Saturday and lunch Sunday; non-refundable processing fee of $50. Cancellations before Wednesday, April 10, will be refunded the entire retreat fee less $50. No refunds will be made after April 10.

Lodging: Please make your own reservations. Arrangements have been made with the following hotels to offer a limited number of guest rooms at a reduced rate for May 3 and 4. Contact each hotel directly and ask for the "UW Health Retreat" block of rooms. The hotels will release any remaining rooms in each of these blocks to the general public after Wednesday, April 3.
