Paramedic Training
The Paramedic Training course offered by UW Health's Emergency Education Center includes 18 weeks of lecture and clinical study at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.
Courses are generally held Monday-Friday from 8am-4:30pm, but some clinicals start earlier than 8am and some end later than 4:30pm. We schedule all the clinicals for the Paramedic Training students - there is no self-scheduling.
The Paramedic Training clinicals are assigned to complement the lecture material. For example, an OB lecture will be given, followed by an OB clinical, with ER and OR clinicals throughout the entire course.
After the first 18 weeks, the Paramedic Training students are scheduled for an approximately 10-12 week ride time with a paramedic ambulance service somewhere in Wisconsin. After 28-30 weeks, students are then eligible for the National Registry Practical exam, held here at our UW Health training center.
Paramedic Training Pre-Requisites
To be eligible to be considered for the Paramedic Training course, one must have:
- An EMT basic license
- CPR certification
- Successful passing of two pre-tests (math and basic EMT)
- And an interview
Cost and Schedule
Our classes are quite small, typically with 10 or fewer students. Cost is $4,000. Classes typically start each September, right after Labor Day. The 2008 class will begin on September 2. On rare occasions, a class starts in late Spring. However, we will not offer a Paramedic Training class for Spring 2008.
