e-Care: A Second Set of Eyes in ICU

Through the e-Care of Wisconsin program, UW Health critical care medicine doctors and experienced critical care nurses are able to provide an additional level of patient care to enhance patient safety and reduce complications in participating ICU's across the region.

e-Care is an innovative telemedicine program that uses state of the art advanced technology to remotely monitor critically ill patients around the clock, seven days a week.

In an off-site e-Care "command center," a medical and nursing team of experts observe patients in ICU's. They are able to communicate with patients and families as well as the patient's own doctors and nurses working at the bedside in the ICU's. The continuous observation provides an additional layer of monitoring which enables potential health complications to be identified early, and allows doctors and nurses to respond before complications develop.

"One of the outstanding features of e-Care is an early warning system which alerts staff of potential patient complications," said Ken Wood, MD, UW Health critical care physician and medical director of the e-Care program.

The remote care system has been adopted by more than 200 hospitals nationwide as the shortage of critical care specialist grows and as evidence builds that the earliest possible interventions may help reduce complications among the most severely ill patients.
