Pain consultationUW Health’s Interventional Pain Program combines expert diagnosis with state-of-the-art treatment to help patients reduce pain, regain function and return to independence. Interventional pain treatment may include injections, selective nerve lesioning, implanted devices, and other techniques.

Our staff evaluates outpatients at the Pain Clinic to determine what type of treatment will work best. We also evaluate inpatients at UW Hospital when needed. When interventional treatment is appropriate, patients are treated at the Madison Surgery Center.

Pain interventions available through our program include:

  • Comprehensive examination and treatment planning
  • Image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic injections, including epidural injection, facet joint injection, medial branch block, plexus block, sympathetic ganglion block, discography and others
  • Therapeutic radiofrequency nerve ablation for neuropathic pain and facet joint syndromes
  • Implanted drug delivery and nerve stimulation systems for carefully selected patients
  • Joint injections, including knee, hip and shoulder
  • Sacroiliac joint injections (SIJ)
  • Image-guided intramuscular injections for piriformis and other deep muscles
