 The Madison Chapter of Flashes of Hope, located at the American Family Children's Hospital, provides free professional portrait services for families of children fighting cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The classic black and white portraits, taken by award-winning photographers, help children feel better about their changing appearance by celebrating it.Chapter director and nursing coordinator Trudy Brule established the chapter in June 2007 with a grant from the Cure Kids Cancer Coalition. Each month, Trudy and her group of volunteer photographers and stylists transform an American Family Children's Hospital clinic waiting room into a photo studio. Teen patients and moms are treated to mini-makeovers. Patients are photographed individually, and also with their family members.
About 6-8 weeks after the shoot, families are presented with a beautiful portrait gift package featuring two 8x10 portraits framed in a leather portfolio, a set of 4x6 proofs and a CD of all the images so that copies can be made for families and friends. This gift package is completely free to the families.
Photo shoots are held on Thursdays from 1-5 pm in the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology clinic area on the second floor, or in the child's inpatient room if he or she is not able to come to a central area. Flashes of Hope appointments can be coordinated with clinic visits or treatments.
