Programs and research

Nationally verified burn care

Burn center verification by the ABA is a mark of excellence. The designation shows that we offer the highest quality care for burn patients.

Our burn care team also teaches the community how to prevent burns. We provide programs for injury prevention, public and professional education and research on emerging burn treatments.

What does burn verification mean?

Attaining burn center verification is a rigorous review program. The process verifies that a burn center's resources provide optimal care to burn and wound patients, from the time of injury through rehabilitation.

Verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS)and the American Burn Association provides a true mark of distinction. It is an indicator to government, third-party payors, patients and their families, and accreditation organizations that the center provides high-quality patient care and meets the demanding ACS standards.

Innovative research, better outcomes

The burn doctors and scientists at UW Health and the University of Wisconsin work on projects and studies to learn everything they can about new ways to help burn patients. Our research areas include:

  • Evaluating skin substitutes for faster treatment and less scaring

  • Understanding how the depth of burn injury impacts healing

  • Using guided imagery and virtual reality as coping tools for pain and depression
