Double Cord Blood Transplant

The Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program at UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin has served adult patients since 1981 and pediatric patients since 1982.

What is an allogeneic blood or marrow transplant?

In allogeneic stem cell transplant, serious blood cancers and other disorders are treated with high doses of chemotherapy and sometimes total body irradiation followed by an infusion of donated stem cells. Donated stem cells are collected from a matched family member, an unrelated donor or donated umbilical cords. The purpose of the chemotherapy and irradiation is to prepare the body to accept the donated stem cells and to control and even cure disease. The purpose of the stem cell infusion is to restore the body's ability to produce red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

What is an autologous stem cell transplant?

Autologous stem cell transplant is one treatment option for patients with serious blood cancers or other disorders. Transplant is often recommended because the disease does not respond to standard chemotherapy or because the disease has returned after treatment with standard chemotherapy. In autologous stem cell transplant, stem cells collected from the patient are returned after treatment with chemotherapy. The goal of autologous stem cell transplant is to control or cure disease.

What is a double umbilical cord blood transplant?

In umbilical cord blood transplant, serious blood cancers and other disorders are treated with high doses of chemotherapy and sometimes total body irradiation followed by an infusion of donated umbilical cord blood stem cells. When a suitable living related donor or unrelated donor cannot be found, using donated stem cells collected from two donated umbilical cords is an option.
