Alcohol Related Research Efforts

In addition to research being conducted through the Wisconsin Initiative and its community partners, the following projects and researchers from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the University of Wisconsin are actively investigating the effects of alcohol and alcohol dependence within communities across Wisconsin.
 
Externally Funded Research with the Department of Family Medicine
 
The following research on the effects of alcohol and alcohol dependence is currently being conducted by faculty within the Department of Family Medicine.
 
The Healthy Moms Project
  • Description: The study is designed to test the efficiency of a primary care-based brief intervention for women who used alcohol during their last pregnancy who resume heavy drinking during the post-partum period. The ultimate goal is to reduce alcohol use, alcohol related harm, and fetal alcohol exposure in subsequent pregnancies.

Alcohol Biomarkers in General Clinical Settings - The CDT Study
  • Description: This study will assess the clinical utility of Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (%CDT) testing in patients admitted to UW Hospital for trauma. The primary question of interest is whether elevated CDT levels (>2.5%) are associated with higher rates of hospitalization and surgical complications.

  • Description: CHIPs is examining the efficacy of combined brief interventions addressing a variety of student health issues, including tobacco and alcohol use, exercise, nutrition, mental health, and high risk sexual behaviors.

  • Funded by: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
  • Description: Meditation is a promising treatment for addictive disorders but has not been rigorously assessed. The goal of this study was to evaluate study methods and gather preliminary data on efficacy of meditation for alcohol relapse prevention.
  • Principle Investigator: Aleksandra Zgierska, MD, PhD - Family Medicine
  • Funded by: American Academy of Family Physicians, Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians; Department of Family Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Description: The primary goal is to test whether daily methylphenidate administered for 5 days for the treatment of ADHD in children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder will improve behavior and attention. The long-term goal is to increase the ability of children with FASD to learn and succeed as independent adults.
