Welcome to UW Health at The American Center
For more than 100 years, UW Health and the University of Wisconsin have worked to advance the science and delivery of health care. Those traditions are alive every day at UW Health at The American Center – a state-of-the-art facility that takes innovation to a whole new level.
Our building was designed to help us do health care differently. Teams of associates, physicians and patient and family advisors worked side by side to create a one-of-a-kind environment. From the first architectural lines on a page to the last stone placed and piece of artwork hung, we have sought to forge a new path and arrive at a new approach to health care.
Behind every decision is our commitment to place patients at the center of their health care experience and to partner with them every step of the way. That means erasing old boundaries and changing the way we work together. It means looking beyond today’s health care needs to help all members of our community stay healthy for a lifetime.
And it means searching every day for new ways to achieve the remarkable care you expect from UW Health. At UW Health, new is our strong suit, an essential part of who we are. And at UW Health at The American Center, we’re in a continual state of renewal, where in every moment, new starts now.
Different by Design
We believe that health care is all about people – the skill and compassion they bring and the ways they connect, educate and partner with one another in health and wellness.
We also know how the environment can support – or hinder – what people are able to achieve. That’s why we took great care in designing UW Health at The American Center. We involved patients, associates and physicians, and we visited other organizations to gather the best new ideas we could find. The result is a campus we’re truly proud of, designed around the needs of patients and families and with space that enables our associates to collaborate, concentrate and stay energized for continuous improvement.
Our overnight stay rooms are large enough for loved ones to stay nearby, each with a view of our backyard prairie or innovative green roof. The emergency department and imaging suites share flexible space, so we can respond to the ebb and flow of patient care needs. Our operating rooms are large with state-of-the-art equipment for all the procedures we offer.
The second floor dining area offers panoramic outdoor views, and when warm weather comes to Wisconsin, you can take your made-to-order meal to an outdoor eating area adjacent to the green roof. Visitors and overnight stay patients dine whenever possible on foods that are seasonal, local and fresh, prepared by chefs known for healthful and delicious creations.
The Sports Medicine
, Sports Performance
and wellness features of the building’s east wing are second to none. The regulation basketball court, lap and warm water pools, sprint track, turf court and outdoor exercise areas will make rehab or training a joy for athletes of all ages, sports and ability levels. And as part of a stay-healthy focus, a demonstration kitchen will offer nutrition and cooking classes featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients prepared to delight the taste buds.

Medical and Surgical Weight Management
At UW Health's Medical and Surgical Weight Management
program, we believe the most important aspect of weight loss is improved health after surgery or medical therapy. That means the true measure of success is the improvement or elimination of many weight-related health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and degenerative joint disease.
Our clinicians partner with patients to choose the best medical and/or surgical weight management option and give patients the resources to continue on the path to a healthier life.
If weight management surgery is their best option, patients won’t find a better place than UW Health’s nationally accredited Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, located at UW Health at The American Center. Our surgeons are nationally known and thoroughly experienced. Our operating rooms and overnight stay rooms are designed with weight loss surgery patients in mind.
UW Health nutritionists, exercise physiologists and health psychologists work with patients as they prepare for surgery and as they manage their weight for long-term health and vitality. Because weight management is a lifelong process, patients also have ongoing access to UW Health’s online patient resources, weight management smartphone app, support groups and lifestyle classes.
Using Technology to Improve Care and Overcome Distance
Throughout UW Health at The American Center, you’ll see technology at work to improve access to UW Health specialists, enhance communication and make care more efficient.
If a UW Health doctor at The American Center wishes to consult with another physician about a care plan, telemedicine
is an innovative and exciting option. A consulting physician at any location can interact with UW Health at The American Center patients and their health care team using secure video. When needed, video capabilities can be supported by special cameras and digital instruments to allow a full physical exam for most conditions. Even bedside rounds can happen via telemedicine, adding convenience and saving time for patients, families and the care team.
